05 — See & do

Two cities in one day.

Zemun is quiet, on the water, with houses that look like they arrived from another country — because they did. Belgrade is loud and large. An hour gives you Zemun; half a day gives you both.

For 26 November: the day is short and it is dark by about 16:00. Everything in Zemun can be walked before the programme or after it.

Zemun

A walk from the theatre to the tower.

A loop of about two kilometres, an unhurried hour. It starts and ends on Glavna — which is where you already are.

0 min
Madlenianum, Glavna 32 Start. Outside the building is Glavna, Zemun’s main pedestrian street.
3 min
Veliki trg Baroque houses, the votive cross and the feel of a town that was once Austrian. Short, but essential.
4 min
Nikolajevska church An 18th-century Orthodox church at the top of Njegoševa. The way to Gardoš climbs.
9 min
Gardoš and the Millennium Tower The tower from 1896, now Zemun’s symbol. A view over the Danube, New Belgrade and the rooftops.
15 min
Zemun quay Down to the river: promenade, barges, swans and Belgrade across the water.

Belgrade

If you head into the centre.

The classic route from Trg republike to Beton hala, about three kilometres. Enough for an afternoon, too much for an hour.

1
Trg republike A good starting point. The National Museum and the theatre share the square.
2
Knez Mihailova The main pedestrian street, shops and cafés. The densest foot traffic in the city.
3
Kalemegdan The fortress, park and walls above the confluence of the Sava and Danube.
4
The confluence view The panorama where the Sava meets the Danube — Belgrade’s most photographed view.
5
Beton hala Restaurants and a walk along the Sava, below the fortress. For dinner or a drink.

How much time you have

Three scenarios.

Two hours

Zemun: Veliki trg, Glavna, the quay. Skip the tower — the climb takes longer than it looks.

Half a day

Zemun in the morning (Gardoš and the quay), then a taxi to Kalemegdan and a walk to Beton hala.

A full day

Morning in Zemun, the whole of central Belgrade on foot, dinner at Beton hala or Galerija.

Shopping

Two shopping centres.

Ušće is closest to Zemun (12 minutes by car, free parking). Galerija Beograd is bigger, along the Sava, with a cinema and restaurants. For souvenirs and gifts, stay in Zemun — Glavna has small shops that do not feel like an airport.

After dark

Where to sit after ten.

Zemun at night is not Belgrade at night — that is the point. Rakia Bar on Magistratski trg for a brandy tasting, the quay for a walk, the Sava barges if you want music until morning (20 minutes by taxi).
